"He has depth and maturity to match his unending virtuosity and aptitude on the guitar"  -   John Jorgenson

Gifted with diverse musical talents and a bottomless pool of creativity, twenty-two-year-old Quinn Bachand is one of Canada's most outstanding young musicians.  A gifted multi-instrumentalist and natural composer, he is at ease drawing from both his jazz vocabulary and the traditional music he grew up with.   With a tight grasp on the music that embraces the swing tradition, Quinn Bachand and his talented band, Brishen, take audiences on an inventive quest which, through its technical virtuosity, brings together a spellbinding range of musical history to reinvent the categories of gypsy jazz, swing jazz, pop and country, celebrating the music of the ‘30s, up to and including the ‘60s.  Quinn Bachand’s Brishen creates a space where virtuosity meets vibe, leaving you with a sense of jubilance and nostalgia.

Quinn’s multiple nominations and awards include eight Canadian Folk Music Award nominations,  our Western Canadian Music Award nominations and the 2018 Independent Music Award for Best Jazz Song with Vocals.  Quinn was also the recipient of the Saga/DjangoFest Award. He is currently finishing up his fourth year as the Slaight Scholar (full ride scholarship) at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Jimmy Grant Ensemble

Jimmy Grant 1.jpg

The Jimmy Grant Ensemble performs primarily in the style of Django Reinhardt, infusing swing era pieces, original work, and traditional gypsy tunes with the jazz guitar pioneer’s crunchy rhythms and hot harmonies. Jimmy Grant was recently a finalist in the John Lennon songwriting competition for his original song “Insomnia,” and also had an interview with Guitar World for his “5 in 5″ project, in which he wrote five different songs in five days. His style synthesizes a rich blend of Russian folk, bluegrass, Celtic and classical music while remaining true to Django’s innovative guitar technique. The Jimmy Grant Ensemble will bring together two guitars, bass, and violin in an intimate yet energy-charged performance.

Black Market Trust

IMG_3225 EDIT).jpeg

The Black Market Trust are an American pop/vocal jazz band that combines the sound of the great American crooners and vocal groups with the romantic Eastern European gypsy fire of jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. Consisting of five world-class musicians who have traveled the globe recording, and performing on some of the world’s biggest stages with music’s most renowned artists.  With their first album, the band established themselves as leaders and innovators of the style.  Their second album is the critically acclaimed and commercially successful II, with their stylized and modern take on the Great American songbook.  The addition of vocals and drums gave the band their first top 10 radio hit with a rendition of the classic ‘Route 66’.   Their current album Just One of Those Things is available now, featuring the songs ‘Almost Like Being In Love", the Brian Wilson classic ‘God Only Knows’, and the Jamaican Rocksteady-inspired original tune ‘Please Stay’.  Their music has also been featured on the ABC Television series Happy Endings and the Hulu original program Casual

Eric Vanderbilt-Mathews and his All Stars

EVM from Eric.jpg

A Whidbey native, Eric Vanderbilt-Mathews has been coming to DFNW as a fan since the beginning.  He started on violin at age four, switched to piano a year later, and then picked up clarinet and saxophone in middle school.  Since then, Eric has focused on classical and jazz studies in high school and at the University of Washington, deciding on saxophone as his primary focus.

Over the past several years he would join the jams at DFNW, strengthening his improvisational skills.  In 2016, Eric had his first chance to perform in the festival as a sideman with Ranger and the Re-Arrangers and the Hot Club of Troy.   For the past two years he was asked to perform as a leader, so he set forth to assemble an all star band of epic players from across the continent.  Blending the compositional influence, solidity of groove, and swing feel of Django Reinhardt and Louis Armstrong with the harmonic and lyrical freedom of contemporary improvised music, the EVM All-Stars attempt to pay homage to the great jazz tradition.

Cyrille Aimée

Cyrille Aimée 3.jpg

Improvisation is not just a technique for Cyrille Aimée, it’s a way of life. The acclaimed vocalist ventured from singing on street corners in Europe to dazzling audiences at the world’s most prestigious jazz festivals; from sneaking out to sing in gypsy encampments in her native France to acting on Broadway; from braving the notoriously tough audiences at New York’s Apollo Theatre to being called a “rising star in the galaxy of jazz singers” by the New York Times. Among countless accolades, Aimée won the Montreux Jazz Festival Vocal Competition and the Sarah Vaughn International Jazz Vocal Competition. Her most recent album, Let’s Get Lost, is her second with her innovative two-guitar line-up. As an actress, Aimée co-starred with Bernadette Peters in a Stephen Sondheim tribute at New York’s City Center. She’s shared her story via master classes, a TEDx talk, and an address at the Conference on World Affairs.

The Henry Acker Trio

DSC00245 cropped.jpg

The Henry Acker Trio is made up of 14-year-old guitar prodigy Henry, his father Victor Acker on rhythm guitar, and his uncle Dana Acker on double bass. The trio began when Henry was nine years old and starting to amass an impressive repertoire of gypsy tunes. Very quickly the word spread and soon the trio was performing for Harvard, MIT, festivals across the New England, and some of Boston’s premier jazz clubs. With a sincere love of playing this beautiful music, The Henry Acker Trio continues to generate momentum and a buzz with Henry at the helm.

Gonzolo Bergara Quartet

GB_2.jpg

The all-acoustic Gonzalo Bergara Quartet plays a modern variant of 1930s Django Reinhardt-inspired gypsy jazz. Composer and lead guitarist Gonzalo Bergara mixes a cascade of arpeggios with the sounds of Paris and his native Argentina. His first CD, Porteña Soledad, was Editor’s Pick in Guitar Player Magazine, and Vintage Guitar Magazine called it a "masterpiece." They newest CD pick best CD of the year by Acoustic Guitar Magazine. The music is heavily influenced by Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club of France, as well as the traditional jazz and music of Bergara's true home, Buenos Aires. "Gonzalo Bergara’s music exists in a way that very little music does. He has lavished such care on every phrase, built each arrangement with such lapidary precision and pared away anything extraneous, the music becomes sculpture. It has weight, density, gravity. This is serious….and deeply moving. The GBq has been named the best thing that happened to Gypsy Jazz in the last 20 years by the most important Gypsy Jazz Festival in the world, The Django Reinhardt Festival in Samois, France.

Leah Zeger or Daisy Castro - Violin
Max O’Rourke - Rhythm Guitar
PJ Wyderka - Upright Bass

Bina Coquet Trio

Bina Coquet presentes a unique repertoire that mixes brazilian songs with his own compositions - Pé de Valsa, Se Tu Se Achas, and Xote de Manouche, among others.  He demonstrates a universe where creativity and virtuosity come together to create a pleasant and surprising experience for the audience.  Coquet can turn Django’s guitar into a cavaquinho, make the bass line of Dino 7 cordas, drum as Baden Powell, cry like a mandolin of Jacob or whisper in João Gilberto’s hit.  The important thing is that in this melting pot of accents and styles, everyone can dance and have fun with "la pompe" of Bina Coquet’s trio.

Fernando Seifarth (gypsy guitar) and Seo Manouche (bass) will accompany Bina Coquet in DJANGO NORTHWEST 2018.

Since picking up his first instrument the guitar, composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist Tcha Limberger is one of a handful of world-class musicians to have become accepted and respected in a style of music culturally not their own. His showcasing on the international stage of his Transylvanian Kalotaszeg Trio and Budapest Gypsy Orchestra, and his nurturing approach to teaching almost forgotten traditional musics has made him one of the most prominent and ‘important figures in folk music of the Carpathian Basin’. For this, he has received unparalleled praise worldwide from professionals and public alike. Critics remarking on his achievements have claimed he is ’entirely made of music’, ‘The Polymath king of Gypsy music’, whilst musician colleagues refer to him as ‘the fifth element’.

Born into a renowned Belgian family of Manouche musicians, Limberger grew up in a world of the Gypsy swing style of Django Reinhardt, and over the years has collaborated with many of its leading performers, including the celebrated Fapy Lafertin. His eclectic musical tastes, interests and passions were formed from early childhood with his first solo concerts singing Flamenco whilst accompanying himself on guitar were aged just eight. He has an ongoing fascination and love for traditional music from the world over, for a long while leading a band of Belgian musicians playing music from Aimara, and the Quechua Indians of Bolivia. From thirteen he studied modern classical composition alongside the Belgian composer Dick Vanderharst with his composition debut for a dance piece by Les ballets C de la B called ‘Patchagonia’ directed by Lisi Estaras. Two current projects include a free improvisation guitar duo with classical guitarist Herman Schamp, and Limberger’s much celebrated all-string swing band Les Violons de Bruxelles.

Adrien Moignard 1.jpg

With the exciting growth of Gypsy Jazz worldwide, inevitably
there come the great new players. A brewing hot spot for this
growth has been, and always will be, Paris, France. In the
direct bulls-eye center of this energy vortex sits Adrien Moignard.
Moignard began playing the guitar at age 12. After exploring
blues & rock, he discovered Django Reinhardt’s music and
American jazz. He is now one of the most sought after
guitarists in the modern Gypsy Jazz and swing scene.
He is a member of two highly regarded Parisian bands: the
Zaiti Ensemble and Selmer #607. Both bands consist of some
of the top Parisian and French players in the Manouche or
Gypsy Jazz genre today.

Robin Nolan, the former Amsterdam street performer turned international gypsy rock star and prolific educator, is now legendary in the Django world. Always expanding the boundaries of gypsy jazz, his latest release Sin City fuses the worlds of his two guitar heroes, Django Reinhardt and Angus Young. Nolan's critically acclaimed album has taken AC/DC anthems and reworked them gypsy jazz style.  Expect to be entertained as well as moved by Nolan's music, which draws from The Beatles, Ravi Shankar, 80's pop hits and, of course, Django Reinhardt.

This year has seen Robin invited back to the Django Reinhardt festival in Fontainebleau, France, which is where it all started for him after a trip there with his father in 1990 changed his life forever.  Gypsy Jazz has been Robin's passion ever since and, as well as performing all over the world, he has built up a large digital audience through his books, online courses, and magazine "Gypsy Jazz Guitar Secrets" which has helped countless guitarist play Django's music.

One night in 1951, two musical legends, Quebec chansonnier, Félix Leclerc and gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, stayed at the same hotel.   Leclerc, next door, turned to his wife and said, “That guy is keeping me awake, but can he ever play!"  And thus, a friendship was born and rumor has it that Leclerc even took a few guitar lessons from the Gypsy master.  The rest is the product of the intensely creative imagination of the quartet.  It is, of course, a fantastic tribute to a pair of great artists who, on their respective continents, had such a lasting impact on their time and culture.

Pioneers in a domain usually reserved for men, the Imposteures were precursors of the gypsy Jazz wave that swept across Quebec.  This all-woman quartet continues to reinvent this timeless music while integrating new ideas and influences with originality and flair.  From standards to original compositions, the Imposteures musical arrangements innovate, rejuvenate, and leave room for unbridled creativity from these extremely talented young women.

Arnaud van den Berg

This supremely talented young generation from the Rosenberg family brings the repertoire of Django Reinhardt, jazz standards, and vocal jazz at its best!  Besides the Django and Gypsy Swing repertoire, the Rosenbergs explore modern jazz as well, and have performed for several consecutive years at the prestigious Dutch ‘Edison Jazz Awards’, and toured with master pianist Rob van Bavel and the great vibraphonist Frits Landesbergen.

Trio Dinicu

Hailed as “dazzling” by the San Francisco Chronicle, Trio Dinicu combines the forces of three highly distinguished musicians: Luanne Homzy, a world-renowned concert violinist; Tommy Davy, a virtuoso guitarist of the young generation of Franco-Russian guitar; and Frank Anastasio, a legendary gypsy jazz bassist, vocalist, and guitarist.

Highly regarded for their creativity, Trio Dinicu blends acrobatic technique with the improvisatory language of jazz and the richness of Eastern European folk, including Romanian violin, Russian balalaika, and French ‘Jazz Hot’.  Their music pays homage to the golden age of the Parisian-Russian cabaret.  The Trio is named after the Romanian virtuoso violinist and composer Grigoras Ionica Dinicu, who influenced Jascha Heifetz and was admired by Stephane Grappelli, the world’s most famous jazz violinist.  They have performed for audiences across the United States, Europe and Canada.

Their first album Trio Dinicu: Live in Los Angeles (Hot Club Records) was released at DjangoFest Northwest in 2013.

Antoine and Samuelito

Antoine & Samuelito.jpg

Antoine Boyer & Samuelito met at the Conservatoire de Paris in Gérard Abiton’s classical guitar class.  They soon started to play together and developed a new duet repertoire combining different influences and techniques from jazz, flamenco, classical, and pop.  They played their first concert together at the Issoudun Guitar Festival in 2014.  Their performances at the Samois Django Reinhardt Festival and DjangoFest Northwest have earned them standing ovations.  Winners of the fourth European Guitar Award in Dresden, they will appear in several concerts and have just recorded an album, Coincidence, with the label Doctor Heart Music.

Antoine Boyer & Samuelito’s personalities naturally blend together to explore a whole range of aesthetics.  While discovering each other’s music, they not only interpret Django Reinhardt and Paco de Lucía, but also other musicians like David Bowie and Roland Dyens. Their respective steel/nylon techniques merge and form one unique sound, and their compositions Double Sens and Si Fuera Realidad have already captured the imagination of enthusiastic audiences in many countries.

Hot Club of Troy

The Hot Club of Troy, founded by guitarist Troy Chapman, is an acoustic jazz group from Whidbey Island, WA specializing in the Hot Swing/Gypsy Jazz style of legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt. The group places an emphasis on the performance of the compositions of the jazz master as well as the relaying of the history of the Artist, his music and his times.  The group's first album Django, featuring ten tunes composed by Django Reinhardt, was released March 2017.

Brothers Brett and Jeff Feldman founded the Gypsy-fusion band Occidental Gypsy, incorporating folk, blues, klezmer, and Latin influences.  The band tours nationally and is considered among the many new heirs of the Django Reinhardt legacy.

Occidental Gypsy’s second full-length album 44070 was released this past January.   Two of the instrumental songs are about historic events; ‘Vrba’ is about an individual’s heroics to save people from death in Nazi Germany. ‘Children’s March’ is about a Civil rights event in the U.S.  The rest are covers of Django Reinhardt favorites and jazz standards.  Band member Eli Bishop, award-winning violin prodigy, has won a Guinness World Record for fastest clapping (featured in the song ‘Messalina’).

Hot Club Sandwich / Eric Vanderbilt-Mathews and the EVM All Stars

Hot Club Sandwich

More than fifteen years ago, hot-jazz string band Hot Club Sandwich was founded in Olympia, WA.  With two guitars, bass, violin, mandolin, and drums, each band member is also a contributing composer and arranger, and everyone in the band sings.  The forthcoming fifth Hot Club Sandwich recording No Pressure features a title track by the group’s 74-year-old guitarist Ray Wood and a guest appearance by mandolinist David Grisman.  As the name suggests, the Hot Club Sandwich repertoire carries a reverence for Gypsy Jazz along with folkloric influences from around the world that flourished during the same era.   In some cases, the band has been known to venture into Western twang territory, including in collaboration with the late legend Dan Hicks.

Eric Vanderbilt-Mathews and the EVM All Stars

general-mojos-051.jpg

A Whidbey native, Eric has been coming to DFNW as a fan since the beginning.

Last year, Eric had his first chance to perform in the festival as a sideman with Ranger and the Re-Arrangers and the Hot Club of Troy. This year he was asked to perform as a leader, so he set forth to assemble an all star band of epic players from across the continent.  Blending the compositional influence, solidity of groove, and swing feel of Django Reinhardt and Louis Armstrong with the harmonic and lyrical freedom of contemporary improvised music, the EVM All-Stars attempt to pay homage to the great jazz tradition.

Free Patio Party with Good Company

  • Whidbey Island Center for the Arts (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

What better way to start off our 17th Annual DjangoFest NW than with a D’jammin’ block party? WICA encourages Langley residents and our DjangoFest guests to kick off their shoes for a night of fun and festivity before we dive into our all-star concert lineup.

No ticket? No problem! The evening will include a free outdoor performance by Seattle swing band Good Company.

There will also be a beer garden featuring selections from Diamond Knot Brewery, as well as pizza for purchase. So come by and unwind, we would love to see you!

Seattle six piece Good Co is the United States' first live Electro Swing Band. That new old sound, Electro Swing combines the era of illicit booze, jitterbugging flappers, and underground speakeasies with the funky beats and the electric sound of today's dance music. At Good Co performances it's quite common for such things as beatboxing harmonica jams, onstage dance parties, and crowd sing-alongs to spontaneously break out.

As the United States' first Electro Swing Band, Good Co is proud to present this new genre to hep cats everywhere. Pounding dance beats are mixed with gypsy jazz guitar riffs, samples from the past turned on their head along with a live horn section make for the best sounding dance party this side of the 1920s
