Michael Horowitz: Gypsy Picking/Right Hand Technique

Right hand picking technique is one of the most demanding aspects of playing Gypsy jazz. This workshop will teach you the rest-stroke picking technique used by Django Reinhardt, Stochelo Rosenberg, Biréli Lagrène, and nearly every other Gypsy jazz guitarist.  Learning to play with rest-strokes will give you the “Gypsy sound” by dramatically improving your volume, speed, and tone. To help put the rest-stroke technique in context, students will learn several of the most commonly used Gypsy phrases, arpeggios, and chromatic runs, which do not appear in his book Gypsy Picking. Students will also learn basic principles of efficient left hand fingerings which, when used in conjunction with the rest-stroke picking technique, allow one to play with improved speed and articulation. These examples will be included in handouts written in both standard notation and tablature.

Michael Horowitz is the founder of the publishing company and Gypsy jazz retail store DjangoBooks.com and is the author of the books Gypsy Picking, Gypsy Rhythm, and Unaccompanied Django.

Dave Kelbie: Rhythm Guitar - Including Swing, Gypsy Swing, and Odd Time Signatures

Dave Kelbie has devoted his professional career to playing rhythm guitar. He has accompanied every big name guitarist in the Gypsy jazz world. He has toured worldwide and recorded with Fapy Lafertin, Angelo Debarre, Tcha Limberger, Mozes Rosenberg and Lollo Meier; and has appeared with Biréli Lagrène, Andreas Oberg, Garry Potter, and many others.

His band “The Dime Notes,” with U.S pianist Andrew Oliver, has set alight the vintage jazz scene in the UK; and through a recent project with New Orleanian clarinetist Evan Christopher and “Django a la Creole,” Kelbie has become one of the most sought after rhythm guitarists on the world stage.

He tours regularly with ex-Soft Machine guitarist John Etheridge and is highly respected for his knowledge of ‘odd time signature’ central European rhythms from the Balkans. He has worked with “Kal” from Serbia, “The Original Kocani Orkestar” from Macedonia, and the multi-national cooperative “Szapora” from the UK

This interactive session with Dave Kelbie will cover a number of aspects of rhythm playing: right hand position, plectrum technique, chord progressions and substitutions, practice routines and warm-up techniques, and strumming technique differences between Gypsy swing and straight-ahead jazz.

Most will be in Swing time with a smattering of South American grooves, straight and odd time signatures.

Christiaan Van Hemert - Violin Workshop 2: Gypsy Jazz Improvisation

Christiaan Van Hemert of The Rosenberg Academy
Gypsy Jazz Improvisation System

During this workshop Christiaan will explain his system for violin improvisation.  The system is very different from the standard academic ways of learning improvisation.  It is based on exercises to outline four basic harmonic colors while integrating random chromaticism.  This will enable to the user to employ his creativity while still making (a lot) of harmonic sense.  It is recommended for participants to be familiar with chord symbols.

Christiaan van Hemert - The Rosenberg Academy -The ‘Dutch Style’

He is one of the premier violinists in the current gypsy jazz scene and often performs as a guest of the Rosenberg Trio and alongside Stochelo Rosenberg in different groups.  He has played with countless high profile gypsy jazz artists among which are, Mozes Rosenberg, Paulus Schafer, Fapy Lafertin, Tchavolo Schmitt, Roby Lakatos and many others.

Besides his activities as a performer he is well known as an educator, teaching at the Rotterdam University of the Arts and in a host of educational videos online. He often hosts workshops worldwide both on violin and guitar and is an expert in the so called ‘Dutch Style’ of gypsy jazz.  Together with Stochelo Rosenberg, he maintains and teaches at the online tuition site The Rosenberg Academy.

The Rosenberg Academy is an online tuition site on which thousands of students are taught the ins and outs of the ‘Dutch Style’ of gypsy jazz by Stochelo Rosenberg and Christiaan van Hemert.  Here at DFNW we are proud to present lessons from the Rosenberg Academy, live and in person, taught by primary instructor, Christiaan Van Hemert.

Christine Tassan et les Imposteures Band Workshop

  • Whidbey Island Center for the Arts (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Christine Tassan et les Imposteures: Arrangement and playing in the context of a gypsy jazz band.

This is a band workshop, given by the group Christine Tassan et les Imposteures, and it will focus on playing in/with a band. This workshop is open to all melodic and rhythmic instruments (guitar, violin, clarinet, mandolin, bass etc...), including singers.

You will learn how to play in the “real” context of a band: how to arrange a song with introduction, conclusion and variations on the main melody; how to vary the dynamics, how to create “surprises” for the listener; how to communicate between musicians, how to exchange solos, use trades and breaks. Christine Tassan et les Imposteures will propose you some arrangements on standard songs (such as All of Me, Les Yeux Noirs, Minor Swing etc...) that all students will play together, guided and supported by the four musicians of the band.

The workshop will also be a great occasion to discover the life of the band and of his musicians.

Recommended for all levels. Open to listeners as well as participants.

Workshop fee $60
Spectators $20

Christiaan Van Hemert - Violin Workshop 1 - Technique and Sound Production

Christiaan Van Hemert of the Rosenberg Academy
The Dutch Style
Technique and Sound Production

Here we will focus completely on a nowadays rare but very effective violin technique. Christiaan was schooled in the Auer school of violin and as a result plays without shoulder rest and with a Russian bow hold (much like Heifetz and Milstein).   After the initial hurdles, correct application of this technique will result in effortless, completely relaxed and pain free playing.

The technique will also enable you to pick up virtually any violin and produce a beautiful and strong sound without a warm up, even after weeks of not touching a violin.  It will help your vibrato, your bowing and your tuning.  It is also very suitable for playing gypsy jazz, especially because this technique facilitates legato playing, fast playing and sophisticated sound production.

Michael Horowitz
Rhythm Changes Workshop - Advanced Harmonic and Rhythmic Concepts

Rhythm Changes (i.e. the chord progression for "I Got Rhythm") is one of the most common chord progressions used in jazz.  A full understanding and mastery of this chord progression is a prerequisite for any jazz musician.  In this workshop, you will learn how gypsy jazz legends Django Reinhardt, Bireli Lagrene, Stochelo Rosenberg, etc, approached accompaniment for Rhythm Changes.  We will discuss Django's more traditional sounding pre-war approach to Rhythm Changes as well as the more modern devices and chord substitutions used by contemporary players.  By the end of this class you will have the tools to play Rhythm Changes like a pro!

Michael Horowitz - Gypsy Picking Workshop: Right Hand Technique

Michael Horowitz
Gypsy Picking Workshop: Right Hand Technique

Right hand picking technique is one of the most demanding aspects of playing Gypsy jazz.  This workshop will teach you the rest-stroke picking technique used by Django Reinhardt, Stochelo Rosenberg, Bireli Lagrene, and nearly every other Gypsy jazz guitarist.  Learning to play with rest-strokes will give you the "Gypsy sound" by dramatically improving your volume, speed and tone.  To help put the rest-stroke technique in context, students will learn several of the most commonly used Gypsy phrases, arpeggios, and chromatic runs which do not appear in my book Gypsy Picking.
